Brain Health After 50: Why It’s Never Too Late to Start Learning

Brain Health After 50

Turning 50 can encourage us to think differently about our health, lifestyle and future.

We may become more aware of the importance of physical activity, sleep and maintaining social connections.

But what about keeping our minds engaged?

Brain health after 50 is influenced by many factors, including cardiovascular health, lifestyle, genetics and access to healthcare.

Cognitively engaging activities can also form part of a healthy routine.

Learning a new skill is one way to introduce unfamiliar challenges into everyday life.

It might involve studying a language, joining a music group, taking a course or exploring a creative hobby.

I began learning the piano in my fifties.

That decision became much more meaningful than I originally expected.

It challenged my concentration, coordination, patience and confidence.

It also reminded me that being a beginner is not something we should leave behind in childhood.

Neuroplasticity continues throughout adulthood, although learning can change with age.

We should therefore avoid assuming that our capacity for development disappears after a particular birthday.

You do not need to make dramatic changes overnight.

Choose something that interests you and give yourself permission to learn.
