Welcome to Regain the Brain

Welcome to Regain the Brain, a place dedicated to neuroplasticity, resilience, lifelong learning and the possibility of change.

I’m Darren Jewell, a NeuroResilience coach, inspirational speaker, author and brain injury thriver.

When I was just 15 months old, I fell from a balcony and sustained a serious brain injury. My parents were warned that I might never have much of a life or be able to retain information properly.

But that prediction did not become the complete story of my life.

I went on to spend 16 years working as a chef, retrained as a plumber, learned website development, became a speaker and coach, wrote books and started learning to play the piano in my 50s.

My journey has taught me something powerful:

What happens to us can shape our lives, but it does not always have to define our future.

Why I created Regain the Brain

Regain the Brain grew from my personal experience of discovering what the brain may be capable of.

The brain can adapt, learn and reorganise itself in response to experience and repeated practice. This ability is known as neuroplasticity.

That does not mean every difficulty has a quick or simple solution. It does mean that change may remain possible, even when progress feels slow.

I created Regain the Brain to help people move beyond limiting beliefs, rebuild confidence and begin taking practical steps towards the person they want to become.

It is not about returning to exactly who you were before adversity.

Sometimes there is no previous version of life to return to.

Sometimes resilience means bouncing forward.

Who is Regain the Brain for?

Regain the Brain is for anyone who feels stuck, underestimated or uncertain about what comes next.

It may be for you if you are:

  • Recovering or rebuilding after adversity.
  • Adjusting to an unexpected life change.
  • Trying to regain your confidence.
  • Beginning again after 50.
  • Interested in keeping your brain active.
  • Learning something new.
  • Moving towards a goal that once felt impossible.
  • Ready to challenge the story you have been telling yourself.

You do not need to have experienced a brain injury to benefit from understanding how your brain learns and adapts.

Every time you practise a skill, challenge an old assumption or respond differently to a familiar situation, you are giving your brain new information.

Small steps can create meaningful change

We often delay change because we believe the first step needs to be enormous.

It doesn’t.

Change can begin with reading a book, cooking an unfamiliar meal, taking a different route, learning a musical instrument, attending a class or finally doing something you have been frightened to attempt.

The important thing is not being brilliant immediately.

The important thing is being willing to begin.

When I started learning the piano in my 50s, I was not trying to prove that I was already a musician. I was giving my brain a fresh challenge.

When I returned to website development, I had to become a beginner again.

Every new skill reminded me that not knowing how to do something today does not mean I cannot learn how to do it tomorrow.

The word “yet” can change everything.

What you will find here

On this website, I will share:

  • Practical ideas about neuroplasticity and resilience.
  • Personal lessons from my brain injury journey.
  • Ways to introduce novelty and learning into everyday life.
  • Thoughts about confidence, identity and reinvention.
  • Books, videos and podcast conversations.
  • Information about Regain the Brain coaching.
  • Inspirational speaking opportunities.
  • Travel experiences that challenge the brain.
  • Encouragement for people who are ready to take their next step.

You will not find promises of instant transformation.

You will find honest experiences, practical encouragement and a reminder that progress is still progress, even when it happens one small step at a time.

Your next chapter can begin here

Perhaps you arrived on this website because part of you believes that something needs to change.

You may not know exactly what that change looks like yet.

That is perfectly all right.

You do not need to see the entire journey before taking the first step.

Begin with curiosity.

Begin with one new challenge.

Begin by replacing “I can’t do that” with:

“I can’t do that yet.”

Welcome to Regain the Brain.

Your brain can change. So can your future.
