Confidence is often misunderstood.
We sometimes imagine that confident people were simply born believing in themselves.
But confidence can also develop through experience, encouragement and repeated opportunities to practise.
For much of my life, confidence was something I struggled with.
Living with the consequences of a childhood brain injury affected how I saw myself and what I believed I could do.
Over time, I began to discover the value of taking manageable steps outside my comfort zone.
Learning the piano was one example.
I did not begin as a confident musician. I began as someone willing to try.
When people ask how to rebuild confidence, I encourage them to choose one realistic challenge rather than expecting immediate transformation.
Practise the skill.
Recognise what went well.
Learn from what did not.
Accept support when it is needed.
Then consider the next manageable step.
Confidence does not require perfection, and progress is rarely a straight line.
Sometimes the most important achievement is simply finding the courage to begin.
